Oscar Pistorius appears in South African court on the second day of bail plea hearing to continue to fight accusations of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, a day before the Valentine’s Day. Today, the prosecutors are likely to present a new development in the Oscar Pistorius girlfriend shooting case that his neighbours had heard loud arguments in his home before he shot his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Yesterday, being the first day of bail plea hearing, the court heard Oscar Pistorius claim to have shot his girlfriend assuming her to be a burglar.
Chances appear slim of Oscar Pistorius winning bail as he has been charged with six offences including premeditated murder. Oscar Pistorius’ lawyers will have to prove ”exceptional circumstances” to have any chance of him being bailed until he goes on trial.
The first day of bail plea the court heard from the Paralympic star that he woke in the middle of the night and thought he heard an intruder in his bathroom. In pitch darkness, Oscar Pistorius said he took a pistol from beneath his bed. After screaming for the intruder to leave, he said he fired four shots through the door. Only after shooting, he said he realised that Reeva Steenkamp was not in bed. Then he is said to have broken the bathroom door to find her lying on the floor. ”She died in my arms,” Oscar Pistorius said in a statement, adding, “I am absolutely mortified at the death of my beloved Reeva.” After his affidavit was read out, Oscar Pistorius wept inconsolably.
The prosecutors argued that there is no proof to support his report that he mistook her for a burglar. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel said in the court, “It was all part of the pre-planning. Why would a burglar lock himself inside the bathroom?” The first day of bail hearing coincided with Reeva Steenkamp’s funeral. The 29-year-old model was cremated at her home town of Port Elizabeth.
