Prior to his meeting with Alex Salmond in Edinburgh, PM David Cameron’s speech, regarding the Scottish independence referendum in 2014, has consisted of the PM mentioning to the Scottish and the wider British people that the referendum would be just, important and legal. The independence referendum would symbolise a momentous chapter in Scottish political history.
The David Cameron speech referred to the noteworthiness of this referendum for Scotland as its ‘future’ depended on the referendum’s verdict.
The PM will visit the Scottish First Minister to sign a pact to stage a sovereignty referendum. The pact will present to Scotland’s parliament the authority to decide the vote’s date, franchise and the wording on the ballot paper.
Before the PM’s meeting with Salmond, the PM will journey to the Rosyth shipyard in Fife, where the aircraft carrier, HMS Queen Elizabeth, is being assembled.
A source, connected to David Cameron, has remarked that the PM’s visit to the multibillion pound project is meant to demonstrate the ‘economic’ and ‘security’ advantages that Scotland would ‘lose’ if its 305-year-old Union with England is dissolved in 2014.
Alex Salmond has welcomed the referendum pact by uttering that it is a significant step ‘towards Scottish sovereignty’ and a ‘better and brighter Scottish future.’
The Scottish Parliament is dominated by Alex Salmond’s Scottish National Party (SNP), which has been highly enamoured of the idea of Scottish independence.
The agreement will reportedly commit the Scottish and the UK governments to functioning together for the welfare of the Scottish public, irrespective of the referendum result.
The Electoral Commission (EC) will enact a critical role as regards providing advice on the wording of the question and on other matters as campaign finance.
PM Cameron has remarked that maintenance of the territorial togetherness of the UK is his topmost priority. The UK government is expected to grant, under Section 30, powers for the Scottish government to arrange a legal referendum.
The referendum will have a Yes/No query on Scotland quitting the UK to attain sovereignty.
