Deputy Prime Minister and Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has called on the government to give a second thought to its plan for secret justice courts, pointing out that the ministry should not interfere with the proceedings of the judiciary.

Coincidentally, Clegg’s call comes immediately after the Joint Committee on Human Rights has issued a report criticising the government’s move to as certain closed hearings in the best interest of national security.

The committee says the points raised by the government to substantiate its claims in favour of the need for secrecy are too obscure and unspecific and seem to lack perception about the power of the judiciary in the country.

While Mr Clegg clearly opposed the idea of privately held inquests, the human rights report said the government is planning to implement something fundamentally unfair on the basis of “spurious assertions” about matters of national security.

Meanwhile, Justice Secretary Ken Clarke said the proposals could fetch “a common-sense solution to a genuine problem”, assuring that they would be used sporadically only in extremely sensitive cases.

Analysts say Clegg’s main purpose of the opposition is to ensure the surveillance plan doesn’t jeopardise civil liberty rights through concealment of information that should have been available to the masses. He made his position very clear saying that unless alterations are made in the proposal, he won’t sign up for it.

Once approved, the proposed plans would authorise special advocates to look into highly classified public data without disclosing the content of the materials to claimants or defendants.
