A four-star hotel constructed specially for hospital patients, built and funded by University College London Hospital’s charity, has opened in London.
Cotton Rooms, as it has been christened, is the first of its kind in the NHS located near Tottenham Court Road. The 35-bed hotel includes all the comforts of a good hotel with complimentary services such as fluffy towels, slippers and internet access.
The hotel will specially cater to cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy on a daily basis. Other patients who are undergoing tests at UCLH Macmillan Cancer Center will also have the opportunity to enjoy stay at the hotel. Patients can receive hospital treatment during the day then check into the Cotton Rooms for relaxation.
NHS has made these new arrangements considering patients who either endure long journeys home every night or stay on a noisy ward or in nearby hotels alongside ordinary paying guests. Cotton Rooms is not open for public and is the first hotel to target only hospital patients. In the past, hospitals have put patients in hotel rooms instead of wards, but this concept is entirely new.
William Laughton, 25, who is undergoing treatment for leukaemia is one of the first to check in to the hotel. Regarding his health he said that his immune system does not permit him to travel long and hence his stay at Cotton Rooms makes his treatment hassle-free.
The hotel is equipped with special servies such as a care team which is just a call away 24 hours a day and all guest rooms have telephones with direct lines to the hospital switchboard. There is an alarm beside the bed, in case of emergencies, so patients can be readmitted to hospital at a moment’s notice.
