North London bus strike to affect 51 routes today

Bus strike today in North London is causing inconvenience to commuters as 51 bus routes operated by Arriva will remain affected through the day, as Unite and Arriva unions strike over pay.

Around 2,000 bus drivers from Arriva North London from nine garages are striking today over a decision not to award workers a pay increase this year. The London bus strike begins at 03:00 GMT. Transport for London (TfL) has advised commuters to check its website before they begin their journeys today.

TfL said that only around 10% of the bus routes would be either cancelled or seriously disrupted. Disrupted bus routes include:29, 34, 38, 41, 73, 76, 78, 102, 121, 123, 125, 128, 135, 141, 144, 149, 150, 168, 173, 184, 192, 221, 242, 243, 253, 254, 279, 307, 313, 317, 318, 325, 327, 329, 341, 349, 377, 379, 382, 393, 397, 444, 491, 617, 647, 657, 678, W3, W6 and W11.

Night bus services are also expected to be hit, said TfL. The following routes will be hit tonight and spread into tomorrow morning:102, 128, 149, 242, 243, 341, N29, N38, N41, N73, N76, N253 and N279.

The TfL website said that commuters could take alternate routes. It said: “Bus Passes will be accepted for reasonable alternative routes on London Underground, DLR and London Overground.”

Unite’s regional secretary Peter Kavanagh said, “Christmas is approaching in one of the most expensive cities in the world and London’s biggest single bus operator is rewarding its drivers with a second year of percentage pay freezes. Many other bus workers across London have received percentage increases this year as have TfL staff, yet Arriva North are refusing to reach a fair settlement.”

Yesterday, TfL said that in the wake of the bus strike, tube stations in north and Central London, including Victoria, Seven sisters, Tottenham Hale, Wood Green and Turnpike Lane are expected to busier than usual.
