Continuous downpour in parts of Bangor, Antrim, Lisburn and Dundonald has prompted the civic authorities to issue new flood warnings on Thursday.
Yesterday’s heavy rains caused disruption in traffic on several main thoroughfares, including the Ormeau Road which was virtually impassable with water flowing down the street, leaving vehicles partially underwater.
Police have warned motorists planning to travel north-east to take extreme caution, as the region is expected to be hit by flash floods. With some manhole covers missing as a result of the flooding, police have asked motorists to drive carefully and watch out for debris on the streets.
Rains also caused severe power-cuts in south Belfast yesterday, but the issue was fixed quickly, sources at the Northern Ireland Electricity informed. However, many residents complained of the rising water levels threatening to inundate low-lands.
The Northern Ireland Water authorities came under criticism for its failure to tackle the crisis promptly and effectively. The NI Water could do very little to alleviate the suffering of people living in Finaghy, said SDLP Stormont assembly member Conall McDevitt.
“Although we have exceptionally rainy conditions tonight, the fact is that NI Water has failed in their commitment to support residents here with sandbags or to come up with an emergency response plan should heavy rain fall”, McDevitt complained.
Meanwhile, the Met Office in Belfast has issued an amber warning which is in effect today from 4 am to 9 pm. Paying heed to the flood warnings, the Belfast City Council has opened a hotline, urging people to call at 0800-707-6965 for any emergency advice.
