E. L. James’s erotic novel, Fifty shades of Grey, has been enjoying record breaking sales in book market.
The novel, which describes the passionate relationship between a college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and a young business magnate, Christian Grey, elaborating highly erotic BDSM sex scenes between the two, has sold one million print copies in 11 weeks beating Dan Brown’s novel The Da Vinci Code that took 36 weeks to pass the million mark.
According to Nielsen Bookscan, the book also smashed the weekly record for paperback sales, selling 397,889 copies. Even JK Rowling’s The Tales of Beedle the Bard, which sold 367,625 copies in 2008, have been beaten by James’s erotica.
Fifty Shades of Grey is the first of the trilogy that includes Fifty Shades Darker that sold 245,801 copies and Fifty Shades Freed that sold 212,832 copies last week. The series outsold the rest of the top 50 by about two to one.
Digital sales for the trilogy seem to be as huge as sales of printed copies, as Random House publisher proclaimed ebooks were “at a similar level” to physical sales. Also Amazon informed on Tuesday that Fifty Shades of Grey had become the first ebook to sell one million copies for Kindles.
In the novel, college graduate Anastasia Steele is required by manipulative billionaire Christian Grey to sign a contract that allows him complete control over her life. She gradually gets to know that Grey’s sexual tastes involve BDSM, bondage, domination, and sadism. In order to be his partner, she agrees to experiment BDSM and struggles to reconcile what she is and what Grey wants her to be for him.
